Christmas Gifts made easy
Giving gifts at Christmas
seems to derive from a Roman custom, given respectability by the example
of the biblical Magi. During the multi-day festival of Saturnalia, which
was held in late December, people in Rome exchanged gifts. Roman
literature contains numerous references to Saturnalia gifts, including the
fact that Romans often complained about getting poor gifts when they had
given good ones! |

The early Church was unable to do completely away with the seasonal
celebrations connected to the Saturnalia. Wisely, it chose instead to
adapt them to use by Christians. Gift giving was a natural fit for a
religion whose central tenants include love and charity. Furthermore,
since Jesus was presented with gifts, the custom of gift giving provided
opportunities for teaching religious lessons.
Gift giving in the Middle Ages included an element of social equalization.
Dating back to old Roman customs of the Saturnalia, Christmas was seen as
a time when normal conventions of human society where reversed. In Rome
during Saturnalia, slaves were served by their masters, and children were
indulged. Similarly, at Christmastime feudal lords owed their serfs
Christmas dinner, and were expected to be generous in other ways to those
below themselves in the social order.
Like many other modern Christmas traditions, Christmas gift giving assumed
its current shape during the Victorian era. The relative prosperity of
England and America at this time created a new consumer culture, centered
on displays of wealth. Although we sometimes think of modern Christmas as
being overly commercial, in fact it is less so than it was in late 19th
century.
