Ringing bells is a traditional way to mark the beginning of any event. In
pre-Christian times, bells were rung to scare away evil spirits; in the
Middle Ages church bells were believed to have the same effect. Bells
figure prominently in the liturgy of the oldest Christian denominations,
marking the beginning of important moments in the service. Ringing a bell
was naturally seen as an appropriate way to mark the birth of Jesus.
In the Middle Ages, Christmas was also seen as a time for riotous
merrymaking. The season had long considered a festive one, even in
pre-Christian times. Making a lot of noise was part of the overall
feasting and dancing. The deeply religious people of that time were
expressing their genuine joy at the birth of Christ, and also chasing away
the depression that can easily take hold in the long winter nights. Since
in the Middle Ages most people saw no wall between the sacred and the
secular, the religious use of bells sanctified their use in celebrations
outside the church walls!
The traditional "jingle bell" dates from at least the Middle Ages, when
they were often sewn into clothing. A person dancing with these bells sewn
into their outfit would have created a merry sound indeed. Nowadays we
associate this kind of enclosed bell with the Holiday season, but back
then it was an everyday accessory.
