Although the practice of
decorating trees is attested to in many different times and cultures,
Christmas decorations of the type we are familiar with today originated in
Germany.
Early German decorations were made of wax. Fruits were common, to evoke
the tree in the Garden of Eden. This practice is probably descended from
the Tree of Life that featured prominently in the medieval Mystery plays,
which was similarly decorated.
According to one story, glass ornament balls were originally made as a
pastime by German glassblowers. At the end of their workday, the men would
try to see how big a bubble they could blow with the leftover glass;
sometimes they would compete with each other to see who could make the
largest, thinnest globe. Bubbles that didn't break where sometimes brought
home, and became ornaments for the Christmas tree. The balls where
finished by pouring a silver solution inside, and painting the outside
with transparent colors.
Historically, mercury glass was invented in the early 19th century. It was
made by creating a glass item with an inner core and outer shell, and
pouring mercury into the space between them. Today the term mercury glass
no longer signifies the use of toxic mercury, but simply refers to
silvered glass in general.
It is certain that by the mid 19th century, fine glass factories were
established in Germany and Eastern Europe to provide ornaments for the
local market. These ornaments where not exported to other countries until
late 19th century, however, when the English, and later Americans, began
putting up decorated Christmas trees. Since German glass ornaments were
expensive, the early English and American trees often had homemade
ornaments of paper, wax, and tin.
Today, ornaments have moved beyond the once-traditional forms and
materials to encompass a wide range of styles, appropriate for every taste
and budget. The use of plastic and composite resin materials make possible
a wider range of shapes than was ever possible in ages past.
