The wreath is an ancient symbol of victory and celebration. In ancient Greece, wreaths of greenery were used to crown the winners of the Olympic games, and were also worn by the commanders of conquering armies. Like much of Greek culture, the custom and symbolism of green wreaths was taken up by the Romans, and from there was spread throughout their empire.
Historically, wreaths have been used to celebrate many different holidays. Any festive occasion could be marked with a wreath. In the days before numbered street addresses, wreaths could also be used to distinguish one residence from another.
Since it has long been a custom to decorate with evergreens at during the period around the Winter solstice, making a wreath of evergreens was a natural expression. The wreath, especially when made of prickly holly, also evoked the crown of thorns worn by Jesus at the crucifixion, with the red berries representing his blood.
There is an obvious connection between the Christmas wreath and the Advent wreath. The Advent wreath is custom that is practiced by many Roman Catholic and Lutheran families. It consists of a wreath placed on a flat surface, studded with four candles that are lit on the four successive Sundays before Christmas.
Early American wreaths were made of a variety of materials, from citrus leaves to flowers. Even tobacco leaves might be used!
